Return to KLA Advance

In December 2022, the KLA Foundation committed grants and donations to nonprofits in the Silicon Valley/Bay Area of California and Southeast Michigan totaling $1 million – the first time it has made a single investment of this magnitude and impact supporting social equity, access and education with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

“We cannot imagine a more worthwhile investment than supporting organizations focused on STEM education to inspire the next generation of technologists and community-based nonprofits that advance social equity and justice in underserved communities.”

Jen Shea, executive director, KLA Foundation

Highlights of grants distributed to support efforts in the Bay Area and Southeast Michigan include:

City Year
Support for teams of AmeriCorps volunteers working in schools to prepare students with the social, emotional and academic skills and mindsets to succeed in education and in life. City Year helped with distribution of the book “I Am Enough” – a collaboration project with KLA’s BELIEVE employee resource group and the KLA Foundation in celebration of National Reading Month 2022.

SEMI Foundation
Support for outreach and engagement of students in online and hands-on STEM education experiences, SEMI High Tech U programming and the distribution of STEM kits.

Facing History and Ourselves
Support for the delivery of lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate.

SEMI Foundation participants and volunteers (left and center) focus on STEM activities while City Year’s Kevin Bradshaw, San José/ Silicon Valley senior vice president and executive director, shares words of encouragement with the 2022-23 AmeriCorps member (ACM) cohort.

This latest investment by KLA Foundation supports more than 25 local and national organizations offering education, community enrichment, and health and wellness services – part of the more than $4 million in global investment made in 2022 by the KLA Foundation. This year’s distributions span 13 countries, which include supporting organizations working to advance K-12 STEM education and offer volunteering opportunities for KLA employees, including: FEST (South Korea), Science is Elementary (U.S. and U.K.), Shavot Female Leadership (Israel) and Techniquest (U.K.), among others.

“In 2023, we look forward to expanding on KLA Foundation’s 20-year history of working with organizations in communities where KLA has a presence to help create a more equitable, inclusive and accessible world,” Jen says.
